Flip, hip and a bit of a trip....these are all descriptions of a surfboard coffee table. While adults certainly have a fondness for quirky and offbeat furnishings, teens and younger adults are by far the largest group of consumers who are today finding uses for some of the more unusual appearing home furnishings and accessories.
At one time, a coffee table or end table was seen only as a standard decorative accessory. It had no real function or purpose, particularly in the 50s and 60s. These living room must have items were little more than plain ovals, rectangles or squares with some thin legs and a wooden top. No real effort was made to give these items any real style or practical use. Today you can find quirky, one of a kind tables, and desks that are created from glass aquariums, bike wheels, Styrofoam coolers, scrap wood, wrought iron, or plastic milk crates. You can even find a surfboard coffee table, at homes located far away from the ocean and beaches. Some of these are quite expensive but you can create your own by copying some of the same styles.
While some people might not choose some of the more unique styles of tables for use in their own home, it is hard to ignore how eye catching many of them are. If you want to find something that is going to be a conversation piece then just select a table with a clear glass top and a base that is an upside down aquarium. You have to admit that it is simple enough in design for anyone to create for themselves. Finding an old, but perfectly usable glass fish tank is pretty easy to do. Add a cool top made from wood, glass, or plastic and voila.... you have a functional table on which you can place books, fruit, flowers, or your feet.
For people with a hankering to revisit the early 60's, and add a little beach party theme to their room, a surfboard coffee table is sure to help accomplish this goal. Some of these tables are made from replicas but others actually use a real surfboard in the design. Definitely funky and cool but again, you can create your own with your own board that has seen better days and some adjustable legs that you can purchase at almost any home furnishing store.
